The Warrior Network teaches instruments one at a time, each family in real depth on its own site. Jazz Warrior is the network's third genre site, and it exists because the thing a group is actually looking at when a tune is called belongs to no instrument: twelve or thirty-two bars of shape, a key decided in the four beats before the count-off, and a small vocabulary of edits that every player at the stand is expected to hear coming.
The test a genre site has to pass is whether it is additive. A site about jazz could very easily become a slightly worse copy of an instrument site with the word jazz in front of it, and that would be nobody's best page about anything. So the subject here was chosen by subtraction: take everything the sisters already teach properly, remove it, and publish only what is left over.
The line this site will not cross
The hardest boundary in the network runs between this site and Theory Warrior, and it was drawn before a word of this was written. That site owns ABSTRACT HARMONY: what a dominant seventh is, how it is built, why it wants to move. This site owns THE TUNE. Both sites can put the same chord on a page; only one of them is allowed to explain it, and only one of them is allowed to say which bar of which form it turns up in.
The practical version of that rule: if a sentence here would sit unchanged on Theory Warrior, it is the wrong sentence and gets rewritten. Every page on this site can be checked against it, and the network's copy engine checks all of them on every commit.
Two more boundaries matter. Bluegrass Warrior owns the room a band is standing in; Country Warrior owns a song's parts; Nashville Warrior, when it is built, owns chart notation — which is why this site names degrees in Roman numerals, the way the idiom itself writes them, and never as a run of digits.
The ledger, stated so it can be checked
- Guitar Warrior keeps the neck. This site says the guitar seat comps in three and four notes and stops there.
- Bass Warrior keeps the low end, both seats of it. This site says which chord tone lands on which beat.
- Keys Warrior keeps the keyboard — every voice budget, every keyboard the network models. This site borrows exactly one of them, the piano, and draws it with Keys Warrior's own renderer.
- Theory Warrior keeps the why. This site says where and when.
- String Warrior goes wide where every one of these goes deep.
Why so much of it is computed
Almost nothing on this site is typed. The forms are declared as scale degrees and realized into whichever key you pick; the substitution rules are declared as conditions and applied by code; the bar counts are counted. The test suite recomputes every one of those from raw arithmetic before anything ships, which is the only reason pages like these are worth reading rather than a book — a book cannot re-derive itself when somebody edits one line.
The network
Everything here is static, free and free of tracking: no accounts, no analytics, no third-party requests, nothing to dismiss before you can read a page. Your theme preference is kept in your own browser and nowhere else, which is the entire privacy policy. Tables are built to be read in a sensible order and to carry their meaning in words rather than colour — see accessibility for the specifics and for where to write when something falls short.
